Learn About DCA
Understand the key concepts behind your calculation.
What Is Dollar-Cost Averaging?
DCA means investing a fixed amount regularly. You buy more units when prices are lower and fewer when prices are higher. Regular investing does not guarantee a gain.
DCA vs Lump-Sum Investing
DCA spreads contributions over time. A lump-sum investment puts the full amount to work at once. Their results can differ because the money enters the market at different times.
How Investment Frequency Works
Weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly investing can fit different pay schedules. Compare scenarios with care: investing the same amount more frequently also increases the total invested.
Understanding DCA Returns
Total Return shows the dollar difference between your final value and contributions. The percentage on contributions expresses that difference relative to the money invested. The annualized DCA return also considers when you contributed.
DCA Calculator FAQ
About this calculator and its data.
How is Price CAGR different from Annualized DCA Return?
Price CAGR is the annualized change between the asset’s starting and ending prices. Annualized DCA Return is a money-weighted return that also accounts for the amounts and dates of your contributions. They measure different things and can differ.
What does the return on contributions mean?
Total Return is the final value minus everything you invested. Its percentage divides that gain or loss by your total contributions. It covers the entire selected period; it is not a yearly return. Annualized DCA Return also accounts for when the money was invested.
Is the savings return the same as the Savings Rate?
No. Savings Rate is the annual interest rate you selected. Total Return (Savings) shows the accumulated gain over the selected period, with contributions entering on the same schedule as your investment.
Why can actual price dates differ from my selected dates?
Calculations use available historical prices. Stocks and ETFs have trading days, so weekends and market holidays can shift the dates. Crypto uses available daily USD prices. The actual trading or price dates are shown beside the results, and a notice explains when the latest available price is used.
Can Recurring Investment be $0?
This DCA calculator requires a positive recurring amount. For a starting amount invested once with no recurring contributions, use the selected asset’s one-time calculator →.
What is Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)?
It is investing a fixed amount at regular intervals instead of investing everything at once.
How is the annualized DCA return calculated?
It is a money-weighted annualized return that accounts for the timing of your contributions and final value. It is different from the asset’s annualized price change and is available with Pro.
Can I start with $0 initial investment?
Yes. Enter 0 as your Starting Investment and a positive Recurring Investment. Choose a period long enough to include at least one recurring contribution.
Which investment frequency is best?
Choose a frequency that fits your income and budget. No frequency guarantees the best return. Monthly DCA is free; other frequencies require Pro.
How does this compare with lump-sum investing?
Money enters at different times, so the final values and returns can differ. Use the Stock, ETF or Crypto Calculator for a one-time investment.
